Anxiety

Anxiety presents itself in many different ways, for many different reasons, and can affect anyone. Stress

Life presents us with many challenges. Even though it may feel stressful at the time, it is a very normal reaction to difficult circumstances … but when does it become problematic?

Well if we find ourselves no longer being able to work through demanding situations such as an argument with a loved one, dealing with an angry customer at work, driving on a busy motorway or coping with the demands of being a parent. Of course, we all find different circumstances stressful because we all have different tolerances and triggers … but when things all become too much, we have one thing in common … the inability to overcome stress.

Low Mood / Depression

Many of us will have experienced feelings of unhappiness and being fed up – but depression is more than just a low mood and can be a debilitating, complex disorder, manifesting in various ways and leaving you unable to function. I in 4 Britons suffer with mental health problems with depression being one of the most common, along with stress and anxiety.

Symptoms can include withdrawing socially, loss of interest in anything and everything, lack of motivation to do the things that usually being you joy, feeling exhausted all the time, poor sleep, loss of libido, negative thought patterns and feelings of despair.

OCD solution

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

OCD is a distressing condition caused by high levels of anxiety. The negative thoughts and repetitive behaviours which accompany OCD often impact everyday life.

In an attempt to alleviate the anxiety, OCD forces the sufferer to perform certain ‘rituals’ for example repeatedly checking that the oven is turned off to avoid an electrical fault or washing hands excessively due to fear of germs. However, any relief felt by performing these rigid routines is often short-lived as the negative thinking returns, the anxiety rises, and so the cycle begins again.

Even though OCD can be exhausting, those that suffer with it feel powerless to stop which in turn can lead to feelings of guilt, shame and frustration which exacerbate the underling anxiety and makes the situation worse.

Mid life

Menopause/Midlife

The menopause brings with it a whole host of challenges both physiological and psychological, and it’s an area that I have particular interest in and experience of.

One of the most common symptoms is increased levels of anxiety, caused by the drop in reproductive hormones, namely progesterone. It’s listed as one of the 34 menopausal symptoms and can negatively impact a woman’s entire life.

As well as having to navigate the multiple physical challenges the M word presents, many women may also be having to looking after elderly parents and/or coming to terms with their own children leaving home. There could also be relationship difficulties, resentment and feelings of lack of purpose as they transition through this often-tricky life stage.

Anxiety can affect all areas of a woman’s health and wellbeing, and often leads to an increase in stress. As stress levels rise, it exacerbates many of the menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, poor sleep and low mood and mood swings.

Therefore, it becomes a vicious circle as elevated stress levels then affect your existing anxiety, compounding the already negative affect the menopause may be having on you and leading you to make some unhealthy choices and perhaps even self-medicate with food and alcohol.

Phobia solution

Phobias

The NHS describes a phobia as follows: “A phobia is an overwhelming and debilitating fear of an object, place, situation, feeling or animal” and 12% of the UK population, which equates to approximately 7.2 million people are suffering with them.

Phobias are more pronounced than fears and although they are linked to our primitive survival response, they are created by negative templates that are stored in the sub-conscious mind and they develop when a person has an exaggerated or irrational sense of danger about a situation or object. In reality, they serve no purpose but if severe enough, they can negatively impact your life. As well as restricting day-to-day activities, they can also cause a lot of distress resulting in panic attacks and severe anxiety.

There are 2 different kinds of phobias – simple and complex. Simple phobias refer to fear around a singular object, animal, situation or activity. However, complex phobias are often multi-layered and more disabling than a simple phobia and usually develop during adulthood.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy uses an effective combination of hypnosis and NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) to remove the negative template stored in the sub-conscious and replaces it with a positive response to any given situation. Simple phobias usually require about 4 sessions, whereas complex phobias may require more.

Lack of Confidence/Low Self-esteem

Having a lack of confidence can affect all areas of your life from relationships to work, from your social life to sports performance and can be linked to self-limiting beliefs, low self-esteem and low self-worth. A lack of confidence can skew your view of yourself, may prevent you from reaching your potential, affect your enjoyment of life and can keep you in a negative cycle of self-doubt.

Some people feel they have always struggled with a lack of confidence; however, others may say they ‘lost’ theirs after a certain life event or situation.

Confidence is about having belief in yourself, having faith in your talents, abilities and strengths; it’s really an attitude towards ourselves, so with encouragement we can access that inner confidence and if you think of it like a muscle, confidence can be built up.

No smoking

Smoking

There’s no shadow of a doubt that giving up smoking will be one of the single, most beneficial things you can do to improve your health and wellbeing (in fact, I’d go as far to say it could SAVE your life). Not only will it ensure better health and longevity, it will also ensure a much healthier bank balance, sweeter smelling breath and clothes and generally a much calmer and more relaxed you.

More than 120,000 people in the UK die from smoking and smoking-related disease. Smoking increases your risk of developing more that 50 serious health conditions. Of those 50, some will be fatal, whilst others cause irreversible and long-term damage to your health.

However, knowing these facts doesn’t always help you give up smoking, so that’s where hypnotherapy comes in.  The New Scientist and The Which Report? both reported that hypnosis is the most effective way of giving up smoking, with The Which? Report stating that it also did so without causing cravings, irritability and weight gain.

You often start smoking in your teen years to either ‘blend in’ and seek approval from others or to rebel against authority (usually your parents), but even though you are not the same person you were back then, your unconscious mind deems it important and keeps you smoking.

No matter what your reasons are for continuing to smoke, the good news is that you’ve made the decision to quit and I’m here to help make that process as easy and as effortless as possible and return you to the non-smoker you were born as. Hypnotherapy deals directly with your unconscious mind, often helping people transform their lives in less than two hours.

Vaping

For a small minority of smokers, vaping can be helpful, but unfortunately for most, you are simply swapping one addiction for another – and there is always the danger that you will start smoking again.  As vaping is relatively new, the hazards and health risks are still being investigated, but early reports indicate that it definitely NOT a safe alternative to smoking. In fact it was reported in The Guardian, that the inventor of the e-cigarette has now reverted to smoking cigarettes.

Habits come in all shapes and sizes – some are no more than a minor irritation, others perhaps unsightly or unpleasant … however, some can turn into full-blown addiction which impact every part of a person’s life including their relationships, career and health. And in some cases, they can even prove fatal.

More often than not, those struggling with any addiction will have tried several times to give up … usually unsuccessfully.

This is because the substance or behaviour initially serves a purpose for us and provides us with solution to a perceived problem – maybe it alleviated social anxiety or distracted us from difficult emotions. However over time, the reward and relief we once felt when in indulging, turns into a destructive cycle that can take over and potentially destroy our lives.
