Harness the Power of the 333 Calming Rule

In the non-stop world we live in today, feeling overwhelmed by negative thoughts and emotions can be a familiar experience for many, especially when anxiety appears. As a Clinical Hypnotherapist and Anxiety Specialist, I believe in providing my clients with simple yet powerful practical tools to navigate through these rocky moments. So, I thought I’d share one of those super easy yet empowering techniques on my blog. Say hello to the 333 Calming Rule.

The 333 Calming Rule is a simple, 6-step process that uses the power of 3 and is designed to pull you out of anxiety’s grip and bring you firmly back into the moment.

By following these steps, you can take back control over your mental state and put yourself firmly back into the driving seat, so you don’t feel like you’re being held hostage by your negative thoughts and emotions:

The 333 Calming Rule Step by Step Guide

Step 1: Acknowledge & Accept

Start by acknowledging and accepting the presence of any uncomfortable thoughts, feelings or emotions popping up. Remember, it’s perfectly human to experience them, and under normal circumstances, they pass through the body in about 90 seconds or so. The key here is recognising what’s going on inside without judgment and to remain as neutral as possible.

Step 2: Come to Your Body

Take a moment to scan your body and notice where you feel any sensations – perhaps tightness in your chest, a rapid heartbeat, your skin flushing, a knot in your stomach, tension in your shoulders. You get the idea.

Step 3: Engage Your Senses

Next, bring yourself into the here and now by spotting THREE objects of the same colour around you. This immediate shift in focus draws your attention away from your inner turmoil and offers a brief mental breather and some respite from overthinking.

Step 4: Tune into Sounds

Further expand your awareness by tuning into THREE distinct sounds around you, whether near or far. This widens your sensory perception, diverting your mind from the overwhelming thoughts.

Step 5: Move Your Body

Physical movement is a powerful way to break the cycle of anxiety because “where the body goes, the mind follows”. So deliberately move THREE different body parts – your fingers, feet, toes, or any combo that feels right. This not only distracts your mind but also reconnects you with your body.

{If you want to super-charge this technique, then move your entire body if you can – shaking out your arms, legs and torso is a brilliant way to get you out of your head fast along with tapping your body and even jumping up and down.}

Step 6: Reflect & Reassess

As you wrap up the 333 Calming Rule, take a moment to reflect on your original anxious thoughts and feelings. Notice how they have changed, lessened or even disappeared.

An Invitation to Share Your Experience
